June 2010
BOR 65 perspective from Dirty Dave
This was going to be an epic event. Face it, this event is the most happening in the PRA schedule. The shop has been very busy during the past month getting everyone’s engines ready. Jack has been doing R&D work getting the new CB Strip Dominator heads ready for Zach. Joe started the build on his new bullet for the Strip Dominators, David Stark got his engine finished to debut his return to Super Street, Mark continued to dyno and tweak his combination. Joe was able to bring Jay Schumacher out of hibernation to call the tuning shots. They went over the car front to back fixing all the issues that they found in Phoenix. I worked on my plan to gain a couple of tenths in Super Comp. Troxel even put in a few weekends assembling his Pro Mod creation. As usual, nothing ever goes as planned and it was thrash central the closer it came to race weekend.
Saturday’s qualifying threw all but Joe a curveball. At some point, all the cars were not happy, which meant we all were diving into the cars making adjustments. When the qualifying was over Sunday morning, the cars had qualified #2 (Joe), #3 (Mark), #5 (Dave) and #6 (Zach). Super Street eliminations were plagued with breakage. First round was not kind to Dave and Mark. Zach got past Doug when the D&A machine broke at the line. Joe got a bye run off the Stark’s when their tranny stuck in 2nd gear getting ready for first round. Zach had a bye for 2nd round, and Joe got past Roger when his tranny wouldn’t shift. It was going to be an all Jaycee final. When the dust settled, Joe got the win light, moving Joe into the points lead, backed-up by his runner-up finish in Phoenix. With Jay’s help, Joe had a consistent car during eliminations; (10.291@132.96), (10.172@133.75) and (10.212@133.61).
For me, my day ended bitter sweet. Super Comp has a very competitive field where anyone can win on a given day. I struggled with my qualifying runs, and only qualified 6th out of 9 cars. First round put me up against Joel Carter, the 2007 champ. Everything came together and I got the win light. Second round I broke out against Steve Atkinson. I ended the weekend with three consistent 10 second runs, and some new personal bests.
Jack had the quotable quote for the weekend telling Bill Taylor, “No matter what we are going drinking with two cars in the final!”
Needless to say that many people need to be thanked to enable the Jaycee team to go down the track. First off, we all need to thank Jack and his family. Thanks go out to Jose at DPR, RLR, LAT Oil, Rick at CB Performance, Vdub Parts, Rick and Dom at Bugpack, Mike and Sam at Rancho, Jeff Denham Racing Heads, Sonny’s Welding, and all our friends that support us unselfishly while we get to power down the track.
We all have homework to do and look forward to getting a Super Street 8 car field for the next race.

Next time you are at the track, look for Dylan Venegas participating in one of the trophy classes. Dylan’s Dad, Herman, has known Jack for 30 years. They met street racing and have been friends since. Last year when Dylan was nearing driving age, they asked Jack to build a 2276cc bullet for his street car. Since getting his license he has been hitting the track honing his skills and upgrading the car. All the hard work paid off at this year when he won the T2 class at Bug In. To prove it wasn’t a fluke, he backed it up this past weekend at Sac when he won the trophy class. Rumor has it he cut an .009 light. If you need a driver, Dylan may be the one.

April 2010
Welcome to JayCee’s 2010 race season. Last year we tried to get Zach to blog, and we got one race out of him. We are going to try a different slant this year where I’ll recap the races for everyone and provide some quotable quotes from the team. As you can see I’m already late posting this, but Phoenix was not your usual race. After Fontana last year, everyone took a different path. Joe Maestas blew his car apart, and everything now is painted, polished or chromed. There is still some to do to the car, but it is one beautiful piece. In post season testing at Irwindale, Zach had a driveline failure, so the car was parked while the trans was rebuilt. Mark kept his car as-is and just kept testing. I powder coated the interior tin, had A-1 build an over-the-top header and put a new wire harness in the car. Time ran out for Joe, Zach and myself, so the cars went untested heading into Phoenix.
In Super Street, Mark qualified the best, posting a 10.196 at 128mph, which earned him the #2 position behind Doug Gonzalez. Zach qualified #4 with a 10.607 at 126.50mph and Joe qualified #5 at 12.288 at 78mph. After Zach spun and Ron Fleming crashed in qualifying Mark decided to park the car. Joe was fighting a valve train problem earlier in the day, but figured it out, and ended up being runner up to Doug in the finals.
In Super Comp, I was able to get some new personal bests. Although I still don’t have a 10 second pass yet, my quarter et (11.10) and mph (120.60) says I’m going in the right direction. This pass allowed me qualify #6 out of 10 cars. I got to experience Esther’s crash by being in the other lane on the third qualifying round and used up a bunch of luck on that pass. The Gods were smiling on me and was able to win the event. Bottom line is, without Jack’s help, I wouldn’t be where I am today.
I stated above that I would get some quotable quotes from the guys. I think Zach summed it up best by saying in the Jacuzzi Sunday night. “Stay in the groove”. We all learned a lot and have to remember to be safe and race smart. I can’t wait for Sacramento!

Unfortunately Phoenix claimed 3 more cars at the Bug-O-Rama this year, almost 4 cars, but Zach was able to save his car as it spun out, but didn't hit anything except for maybe a timing cone. We wish speedy returns to Esther, Ron and Todd

A little note sent to us from the 2009 "Driver of the Year" Buster John Varela, It's the little things like this that makes it worth it!!
Big Jack and everyone in the Jaycee Camp…I just wanted to send you a little note thanking you for your continued support and assistance and making the 2009 racing season the most successful and exciting season I’ve had. In the past few years I had been racing in the 11.90 ET Super-Gas and 10.90 ET Super-Comp index classes where we basically built enough power to run a set ET number and most races have to slow the car down to do that. This year me and my partner, Greg Garza, made the decision to jump into the fastest heads up class of the PRA VW Drag Racing Series…Pro-Modified. I jumped in knowing that we had to compete with the fastest and quickest VW’s in the country and didn’t have a chance in hell to win…but I did it anyway. With your help and the help of all my other sponsors I was able to make every race in the PRA Drag Racing Series. In the process I hurt a lot of parts while pushing them through unthinkable stress. Whenever I was down you were there Jack…giving me a helping hand…from late night thrashing to coming into your shop on weekends when you should have been with your family. You made sure I did not miss a race. When the final points were added up…I finished 2nd over-all in points for the 2009 PRA Pro-Modified Class!!!! I also won the “Racer of the Year” award for our persistence and “Never Quit” attitude that we brought to the table. That could not have been done without you and everything you have done for me and my race program. I want to thanks you for providing me with the parts that didn’t fail me:
Jaycee pushrods
Jaycee pushrod tubes
Jaycee aluminum spool
Jaycee spring plate retainers
Jaycee degree pulley
Jaycee distributor clamp with laser-etched degree set points
Jaycee fuel pump block-off
Jaycee by-pass oiling system and filter with external relief
Jaycee external oil pick-up system
Jaycee cylinder power sleeves
Jaycee copper head gaskets
Jaycee stainless 2” exhaust system
Jaycee Weber IDA carburetor rebuild and tuning service
Jaycee late night dyno sessions
And most of all…Jaycee friendship!!!
Thank You Jack!!!

May 2009
Well this was my first super street race and man was I nervous. Everything was on my mind: staging, shifting, launching. I really just didn’t want to screw up. Yes, we did some testing a few weeks prior, but this was the real deal. Unloading the trailer seemed like it took for ever, but finally the call was made for the first round of qualifying. I was lined up against Ron Fleming. My Dad told me that he is an icon in the industry, which made it all the more nerve wrecking when I was lined up against him. I launched, and the car moved around so I had to abort. We came back and Dad made some adjustments and said it will be all good. Second round of qualifying I drove a little over my head and got out of the groove. I knew pops was not going to be happy, and I was right. I got a pretty good butt chewing. I now know what keeping it in the groove means. We came back to the pits and Dad tweaked the motor a little more, and then went back out for last round of qualifying. I Ran a 10.79 at 124 mph which was the quickest I have ever been. Mom and my sister where so happy and my Dad, well lets just say he is all business. I qualified 4th and had Steve Tims first round. Dad said if I leave on him and still get beat, then he will build me a new motor. I said, "What’s wrong with the one we have now?" He replied, "Do you know what training wheels are?" I couldn't help but smile at the idea of a bigger motor. Well here is first round of eliminations, and talk about butterflies. I had a stomach full. Steve and I both pre staged then staged, and I was on the limiter for what seemed like forever. The light came down and it was on. We were side by side most of the way down, but he got me at the finish line. When I saw my time slip I noticed I left on him and pointed that out to Dad. Finally I got a smile out of him. He said I guess its time to get rid of the training wheels. I want to thank my Mom and Dad, without them this would not be possible. Also want to thank Rancho Performance Trans Axles, Sam, Danny and Shawn at LAT Racing oils, my uncle Derrick South for all the hard work he put in the car, and also my sisters for keeping my ride clean between rounds. See ya in Sacramento!

Even though it was a second round loss Dave was still a happy camper as set a new personal best of 6.97 @ 95 mph, beating his personal best by over 4 tenths. Dave has been testing and spending a lot of time on the Dyno at JayCee this winter in hopes of moving up to the 10.90 class. Good Luck Dave!!
